Agent Interface

The Agent Interface defines how AI systems interact with ABIO experiments. It provides a standardized protocol for agents to observe, reason, and act within alien biology simulations.


Overview

Core Interface

AgentSession

The AgentSession class manages a single experiment run. It wraps the scenario and simulator, providing a clean interface for agents.

Timeline

The timeline is the authoritative record of all events in the experiment. Both agent and system see the same timeline. It's the single source of truth for what happened.

Polling Model

Agents learn about events through polling. Each time the agent interacts with the session, they receive any new timeline events since their last interaction.

This polling model works naturally with LLM agents (which are request-response) and programmatic agents alike.

Action

Actions and measurements are unified in implementation but semantically distinct in YAML.

Action vs Measurement Semantics

Both are Action objects, but with different defaults:

Cost Computation

The cost: field can be a constant or a formula (!_ expression). The simulator evaluates it at execution time and returns the computed cost in the ActionResult.

  • Constant: cost: 1.0 — always costs 1.0
  • Formula: cost: !_ base + amount * 0.1 — evaluated with action params in scope
  • Default: actions default to 1.0, measurements default to 0

The simulator is the authority on cost. In simple cases it just evaluates the formula. Complex simulators may compute cost based on world state or simulation results.

Errors have cost too: Even malformed actions (wrong params) take time. The simulator may define an error_cost or use a small default. There's no "free retry" — the agent attempted something, and that has a cost.

This gives: - Uniform model — every action has a result with computed cost - Flexible costs — can depend on params, state, or simulation - Realistic — nothing is truly instantaneous

Note on discovery: Information revelation (discovering hidden pathways, dependencies, etc.) is handled by the simulator's visibility system, not the action model. As the agent makes measurements, the simulator tracks what has been observed and may reveal previously hidden information. This keeps the action model simple: actions change physical state, measurements observe it.

Simulation Timing

Actions and measurements take time. The agent controls pacing through the wait parameter.

Timing Model

Every action has two time components:

  1. Initiation time - Time for agent to "think and act" (trigger the action)
  2. Duration - Time for the action to complete in the simulation

  t=0.1: Agent can now initiate Action B
  t=0.2: Action B starts executing
  t=0.6: Action A completes (duration was 0.5)

Turn-based vs Concurrent Mode

Mode default_wait Behavior
Turn-based true Each action blocks until complete. Agent sees result before next decision. Simple and predictable.
Concurrent false Actions can overlap. Agent initiates actions without waiting, must explicitly wait or poll for results. More flexible but complex.

Most experiments should use default_wait: true (turn-based) for simplicity. Concurrent mode is available for advanced scenarios requiring overlapping actions or precise timing control.


Cost Accounting

Actions and measurements can have costs. The scenario defines a budget, and scoring evaluates budget compliance.

Termination Conditions

The experiment ends when session.is_done() returns True. This evaluates termination conditions in order:

  1. Agent called "done" — Agent explicitly ended the experiment

With default globals, only max_steps (100) is active. Budget and sim time are null (unlimited).

The simulator distinguishes between simulation limits and infrastructure timeout:

Wall clock timeout is an infrastructure safeguard, not part of the experiment model. It handles: - LLM API unresponsive - Network connection lost - API credits exhausted - Agent code hanging

Future Considerations

The following are noted for future milestones:

  • Warm-up period — If needed, the scenario/simulator handles this internally before agent starts. Not part of the core agent interface.

  • Multi-agent support — Multiple agents interacting in the same scenario. Would require extensions to the session model.

  • Experimentation system — Higher-level system for administering experiments: running multiple scenarios, multiple seeds, comparing agents, aggregating results. See M4 in roadmap.


Debug State Trace (Future)

To be implemented later.

For debugging and visualization, the simulator can optionally capture full state at each tick.
